Pinstripe's vocalist has quite a voice... thx for the link!

Pinstripe are awesome!

Must add now, cheers for all the listening as well.

I hope to spend some time over the weekend listening to your picks you've mentioned. Also, I run a very small label with limited national US distro and of course digital distro. I have relationships with some retailers and radio promoters, etc. I'm also interested in production and have contacts with some other cool producers in Atlanta and in Australia. Although formost a DIY artist myself, I might be interested in possibly helping some developing, self-starter UK artists not ready for the big guys such as your company Columbia. I'd definitly be interested if you know any of those sort of artists and bands. I've always had a love for UK music.

Conheçam o som do Bleffe...

Great site folks. I recently posted 4 audio tracks for demo - but realised I'd only allowed the post as viewable by me. D'uh! Anyway - I thought I'd better try and draw your attention to it again - hope you like the stuf. Cheers. MM

I'm doing great thanks and u? :]

Guys:

Seeing that there is a lot to hear. How do we get our things to pop out and grab attention??

Thanks,
Kevin
Stoneshiver.vox.com
Pinstripes' "Did I Say" has that Keane, Fray, Snow Patrol etc. pop/rock sound you first hear on tv, then the radio, not sure these guys can stand out in the crowd with this tune. However, the execution is well done, although the writing is not quite as engaging, a few too many cliches, etc. definitly worth hearing more from though.

Some help!

I wanna see if these blogs and comments are good for something...

We need your help. Yes, we're not shy of asking you a favor. Apside is in the top 20 in a contest in which the winner gets to play BFD, a festival in San Francisco that will feature this year Interpol, Kaiser Chiefs, Queens of the Stone Age, Bloc Party, Social Distortion, The Bravery, Sum 41 and others.

So we need your vote to get into the top 5 to advance to the finals, a show in a famous venue in San Francisco. Go on http://live105.imeem.com/music/3ZAEGm8d/k_vision/ and rate us with 5 stars. If you're not a member of "Imeen", they will ask you to sign up, by giving first and last name and an email address. Don't worry. There won't be any spaming later, and it is less complicated than it sounds. Thanks for your help in advance.

Apside.

To be in a great band you have to have... the tunes, the look and the attitude

Therefore I have just one thing to say...

Check out Frontrunner

Many Thanks
[c’est top]
you also need a singer (a small detail I know, but...)
sooner or later it gets down to the music guys, and your going to have to deliver - hairdos and platitudes and blogs are not going to be enough. Concentrate less on "popping out" and more on the music.

I understand that it is the music. What do you think about our music?

RE: Pinstripe

Did I Say

This recording could benefit by turning the vocals up a touch. Nice clean sound though. Effects are a little cliche I would say. It seems like the bass player is absent in parts where he should be pounding that thing. Guitar strumming could be a little cleaner. You might consider a second vocal part during the chorus. If you are going to use the lead voice as a counter part (ie, "Brighten up my ties") it's best to have that type of effect done periodically throughout the song rather than a one-off boomerang thing late in the song. Second half is awesome though it didn't sound natural timing wise when you came back in from the bridge - sounded like it jumped in too early. Otherwise fantastic job. You guys put in a great effort and a hard day's work on this. I think you guys are on the brink. I see how young you guys are and think Wow!

RE: Pinstripe

This Feeling Inside

I'm not sure if your voice is powerful or aggressive enough to match with the aggressive rock background music. I think you might want to think a little more "pop" with a rock feel to it. Your voice though is sculpted very well and definitely catches the ear's attention nicely. If you kept the current style and gave this demo to a rock producer to mix their natural instinct would be to bring up the level of "the band." But in doing so your voice would clash a little as your voice has a "pop" feel to it and is very gentle. I think of raw Savage Garden when I hear your voice (you could be the next John Waite - I don't know if you know who that is!) It sounds like the band level was brought down to compensate for this. I notice the dynamics of your voice don't change much during the chorus and it sounds like your attempt at aggression during the chorus is not natural and it even wanes which makes me wonder if you and the band are actually on the same page. Fancy production work (doubling, etc.) can help resolve this but I think the band needs to be less rock as I don't sense a rock personality in your voice. But I'm not sure what your aim is. If you're looking to make it stateside this is something you would have to think about. Also, the way it sounds right now is that you are a solo artist with a packaged rock sound in the background (but those are real dudes playing, right?) and that's not what you want if you are an actual band and are looking for long term success AS a band. The way the band comes in and re-enters again sounds slightly off also. I seem to hear essences of Linkin Park and Silverchair in there. Right now if I was the heavy at the record label I would be looking at marketing you to 13-15 year old girls as Emo-pop and that might be the best you could ask for right now. (Beware of those candy-slinging UK producers! Just kidding.) Trust me, that's not a slight at all. It definitely means you've got something. All you should be looking for is a foot in the door any way. In conclusion besides everything I've mentioned you could almost slap this song on the radio right now and that's definitely something to be proud of! Good stuff. - M

Matt. What is a 'candy slinging UK producer'?
When I say "candy slinging UK producer" I meant a producer that force feeds us the kind of saccharin teeny pop music that saturated Top Of The Pops. I suppose it sounded offensive the way I put it...sorry. But actually I was joking.
Matt
No it did'nt sound offensive. I just did'nt know what you meant by it.
I think you over estimate the role of producer - some very big name producers are exactly that: big names, but in actual fact do nothing and know nothing. They simply lend the project their name. Could tell you some interesting stories on this front but wont.
When it comes to shit then look no further than the disunited states D'amerca. At this current moment there is not a white act in the states worth a damn. As ever we have to look to the black community in the states who as ever are completely re -writing the book: Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Dr Who Dat, Jay Dee, Common...
My point is: shit is generally not the result of producers, shit starts much earlier in the musical process.

Lillith

You could wait a long time on a suitable label; I would include unsuitable labels in your search also...
N de H
The role of producer is broad. Some are hands on with arraingements, some come from an engineering background and track or mix, some work more as coaches and a creative catalyst, some "join the band" and take on the role of keyboard player or some missing instrument and guide a band, some play almost every single instrument on a recording and engineer and mix. Some artists are multi-talented and the producers role may just be to sit back and watch the blinking lights. I think it depends on the artist as to how important the producers role is. Some acts are producer invented and driven, you can't deny the influence of a producer there, some can be produced by someone who can arrainge the right team, but just hangs out and ads some input and an objective ear. A really great producer knows which role to take on with a project.
Well, there are many different types of producers, obviously the executive producers (the money men) just rubber stamp the albums. I like Blair's analysis. Clive Owens is a producer but he just brings talent to the table. But these Clive Owens types are the ones pushing music on us. And as far as the UK, I don't believe they've produced a true global "top 40" act since Oasis. And hip-hop may be alive and well in America but the quality of the "top 40" acts is begrudging to say the least and none of these guys who are new to the scene will be around in 3 years time nor will you ever hear them again on radio. There is a serious drought in original palattable music right now but I think it's going to be a long time before the talent pool is built up again. I'm sure if white artists could write poetry to hip beats and it come across as hip and believable that would expose a lot of talent there too. Yes, shit is not the product of the producers but they're trying to sell it us when they should be flushing it down the toilet.
Matt
I think focusing on producers is really to focus on a localised technicality within a much broader issue.ie why music is so shit at the moment and has been for some time. For me this is as much an issue for sociologists, psychologists, economists etc as it is for those involved in the creation of music. At this current moment in time music is technology led and this is not an agenda set by music this agenda is set from without. The key point here being that music is not in poll position in a race it imagines it hosted.

Hello everyone!

I just came here to thank all of you who voted for Apside in the local band contest in SF. We're in the finals, which will be held on June 4th at the Bottom of the Hill in SF. That means that out of 207 bands, Apside is on the top 5. The winner will play at BFD, the biggest music festival in Northern California alongside if the likes of Interpol, Bloc Party, Queens of the Stone Age, Kaiser Chiefs, The Bravery, Sum 41 and others.

We've been chosen by Internet users of Live 105 (the organizing radio station) to be in this final. In fact, we had the biggest number of votes.

So thanks to all of you here who helped us.

this columbia A&R thing is turning out to be useless... great marketing strategy. let me get back to myspace....
true, check out last fm and indiestore as additional avenues for promoting your music
Last FM has been working well for us, would recommend that site

I'm going to check out this LastFm, I always thought it was just a place to share your playlists :)

Anyway, when it comes to getting signed there's no website that can help you, it's just your music, a certain degree of luck and, most importantly, the people you know. Most of the bands who get signed know someone inside the record label, it's something we have to live with, because it's not likely to change soon. That said, it's the music that matters in the end and our abilities in knowing the right people to help us promote our music. We have to shake hands with anyone because no one is going to pick us from our garage.

Well, if you still believed that things happen by luck it's time to wake up and work to make things happen :)

100% agreement there, only person you can rely on is yourself, also nothing beats building up a real life profile (ie gigs), the internet cannot rival that, but it can facillitate a better sense of community among fans

Hi. I would love to hear feedback about our tracks. Thanks
The best thing to do is upload your stuff then it's in circulation. It will be heard by people both at the labels and in the community. Tracks that grab people's attention tend to pop out of the community quite quickly and are listened to by A&R reps from within the labels.

Already have done, did a video interview last week :-)

Will be posted soon.

Is there a way to add a photo thumbnail to my audio I've uploaded???

thanks for asking anna i want to know how to do this too

anyone?

Check this post, there are other ways too. Give it a go and see if it works.

I think it's done? Figured it out I guess? I hope ? hahaha
[c’est top]
Love the music! Pinstripe are brilliant!
Hey I got info on how to do ad your artwork to your mp3 Files you are going to upload to your audio profile. The easiest way to do this is to open your mp3 files in iTunes, in the iTunes playlist window right click on the mp3 you want to ad artwork to and select GET INFO. Once the GET INFO window is open select the tab that says ARTWORK. Once the ARTWORK tab is open browse your computer for the selected artwork you wish to embed into your mp3 file and save. You will then need to delete your mp3 you have already uploaded to your Vox audio profile and upload the new mp3 which contains the artwork information. That's it and you are done pfffff what a task!
Good Luck and check out my new video and songs I on my profile page!!!! Leave a comment and let me know what you think and have a "Fantastic Day"!

Anna Fantastic ;)
